Off-grid solar power systems are used where there is no grid power. Solar panels convert the sun’s energy into electricity for use in appliances (both DC and AC). Batteries are normally added to store energy for use at night or during no-sun days.An off-grid system consists of panels, controller, batteries, inverter and other accessories.
Solar PV panels – they convert energy from the sun into DC power. System sizes installed can be increased by adding more panel/modules in series and parallel.
Charge controller – this component controls the charge from the panels to batteries, to avoid overcharging and damaging the batteries.
Batteries – the batteries store energy for use at night and during no-sun days. Note that one needs suitable deep cycle (and usually maintenance-free) batteries for a solar system
Inverter – this unit converts DC power to AC power – single and three-phase (120V, 230V, 400V etc) so that AC appliances can run. Most home appliances use AC power to operate.
